The Dumpling Galaxy Cookbook by Helen You is a delightful book full of dumpling recipes. As explained in the book, You opened her own dumpling restaurant, and here shares some of her recipes.
The book begins with standard dumpling recipes such as pork and chives, before moving on to egg-based (and vegetarian!) dumplings, more creative dumpling recipes, and sweet dumplings. There are many different kinds of recipes, so there’s always inspiration to try something new.
The best part about this cookbook, however, is that the recipes do not call for a slew of specialized ingredients. Often, with ethnic cookbooks, you’ll need a pinch of this or a dab of that, and they’re definitely not things that I have on hand. Not the case here. The recipes also don’t call for a large number of ingredients, which is also great because I have a pretty basic pantry.
So far, I’ve tried one of the dumpling recipes and it was great. I was excited to try the rather basic recipe with the addition of cooking sherry, and I was not disappointed. Informative sidebars throughout the book provide commentary on the recipes and reasons for including specific ingredients (including the cooking sherry).
The cookbook also includes suggestions for the best ways to cook the various dumpling recipes, although personally I would have liked an introductory cooking techniques section instead of the extra steps at the end of each recipe.
The final section contains dipping sauce recipes, which I have not tried yet, but which appear to be equally simple and delicious. This is a great cookbook to check out if you like dumplings, Chinese food, simple recipes, or just want to try something new. It’s easy to start basic and then move on to the more complex and interesting dumpling recipe ideas. I highly recommend this one!
I received a copy of this book from Blogging for Books for this review.
