Top ten books on my winter TBR

Laut Bercerita by Leila S. Chudori

I finally got my hands on this and I can’t wait! Pulang was really good, and this one is about 1998, so it promises to be just as interesting.

The Enchanted Sonata by Heather Dixon Wallwork

A Nutcracker retelling seems perfect for Christmas, so here’s a new one.

Big Damn Hero by Nancy Holder and James Lovegrove

Despite the fact that it’s weird that everyone speaks Chinese but there are no Chinese people, when I see a Firefly novel, I will read it. And here is one.

Markswoman by Rati Mehrotra

I started reading this and then moved and my new library system didn’t own it. But now I’ve managed to get it from yet another library, so I’m finally going to finish it. Interesting fantasy, from what I can remember–hopefully I’ll be able to get back into it!

Does My Head Look Big in This? by Randa Abdel-Fattah

This book is really old and I meant to read it when it came out and then just never did. But now there’s a book club near me reading it, so I’m finally going to cross it off my TBR.

The Phoenix Empress by K. Arsenault Rivera

People had mixed reactions to The Tiger’s Daughter, but overall I enjoyed it, so I’m excited to read the sequel. Hopefully there’s more interesting world building and more sweeping plot lines.

Before She Sleeps by Bina Shah

I only just heard about this (it came out in August) and I’m so excited to read it. It’s slated as being like The Handmaid’s Tale but in Pakistan, which sounds amazing. I’m definitely planning on reviewing this one.

Brightly Burning by Alexa Donne

Jane Eyre, but in space. I read one of these a long time ago (and I can’t remember the title or author at this point). It wasn’t very good, but I’ll read anything that has the premise of setting something else in space, so here I am.

The Dinosaur Artist by Paige Williams

I don’t read a lot of popular nonfiction and I want to read more, but I’m never sure where to start. Someone else recommended this, though, and I heard dinosaurs and thought it was definitely the book to try to get me into the genre.

The Unbinding of Mary Reade by Miriam McNamara

This is another book that my library has inexplicably not purchased, so I’m happy to finally have found a copy. Lesbian pirates? I need to read this now.

  1. Wonderful list! I haven’t heard of Before She Sleeps but it sounds amazing.

Yes to the Dinosaur Artist! I’ve heard great things. Good luck with your winter reads!

  3. Sounds like you have lots of books to read over the winter!
